{"id":77,"date":"2013-07-15T19:14:23","date_gmt":"2013-07-15T19:14:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ccvhistory.wordpress.com\/?p=77"},"modified":"2013-07-15T19:14:23","modified_gmt":"2013-07-15T19:14:23","slug":"tina-vanhelden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/history.ccv.edu\/index.php\/2013\/07\/15\/tina-vanhelden\/","title":{"rendered":"Tina VanHelden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:left;\" align=\"center\"><strong>Site Office Manager, CCV Chittenden site<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>July 1983 &#8211; July 2003<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0July 18, 1983 was my first day of work at CCV as Site Services Coordinator.\u00a0 \u00a0Michael Sawdey, the regional director welcomed me and gave me a short version of what the <a href=\"https:\/\/history.ccv.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/tina1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-84\" alt=\"Tina VanHelden\" src=\"https:\/\/history.ccv.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/tina1.jpg?w=244\" width=\"244\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>daily routine would be like.\u00a0 Michael had typed the procedures on legal sized paper.\u00a0 One of the procedures was telephone protocol which was very precise and very helpful.\u00a0 It stressed the importance of saying, \u201cCommunity College of Vermont\u201d, instead of \u201cCCV\u201d when answering the telephone. \u00a0\u00a0During my 20 years at CCV, I often referred back to those instructions and I used them when training new employees.\u00a0 After my fifteen minute training Michael left the office to attend a meeting in our Waterbury office and I was on my own.\u00a0\u00a0 I sat at my desk and thought, \u201cwhat am I doing here?\u201d and then, \u201cwhat do I do now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CCV Chittenden county office was located in the Chace Mill in Burlington by the Winooski River. \u00a0The office was dark and musty smelling.\u00a0 The entryway had a desk and some filing cabinets, my area, and there was one small room which was used as conference room and\/or classroom.\u00a0 Michael\u2019s work area was somewhere in the back and there was an office for the Coordinator of Academic Services, Mica DeAngelis.\u00a0 Mica taught off-site several mornings a week and was not there my first morning.<\/p>\n<p>After a while the phone rang.\u00a0 I picked it up and out of habit I answered it by saying, \u201cGeorgia School\u201d, my former workplace, instead of \u201cCommunity College of Vermont\u201d.\u00a0 During the morning the phone rang occasionally and a few people came in to ask questions.\u00a0 I could not answer any of their questions so I wrote down their telephone numbers and told them that I would call them back with an answer.\u00a0 Towards late morning I had to go to the bathroom and I had no idea where it was or if I could even leave the office.\u00a0 Across the hall was a lawyers\u2019 office and I had noticed through the glass in our entry door that their door to the office was open.\u00a0 I decided to ask the secretary there where the bathroom was.\u00a0 She was very helpful and told me where it was and offered to watch my office in the meantime.\u00a0 From then on she watched my office when I had to step out.<\/p>\n<p>Around noon Mica came in.
